AKTrailhead

Trail description:

That's right, Ship Creek is a winter trail (which is due to it being boggy in other seasons). The first few miles of the trail zig-zags it's way towards the bottom of Arctic Valley. Eventually a post is reached with a sign indicating Ship Creek Trail is to the left. Several streams must be crossed along the way, but you should have no problem crossing them in the winter (they'll be well frozen over). Eventually the much larger Ship Creek should appear on the right. One can follow the trail for as long as he/she likes, and either head back the way they came, or continue down the whole valley for a much longer trek to Indian Valley (~30 miles, cross country skis recommended).

Difficulty:

If this were a normal, all-year hike, I'd rate it pretty easy. However, walking through snow with several layers of clothing certainly bumps the difficulty up. Be prepared.

Directions:

From Anchorage, head east on the Glen Highway for about 5 minutes from city limits until spotting a sign for Arctic Valley Road. Take the exit and head right on what becomes a windy road for about 6 and a half miles. There should be a small parking area (plowed out of the snow in front of a gate) around the left at this time. The trail itself is on the right side of the road and a sign marking the starting point can be seen after crossing the snow burm.

Additional Information:

I would suggest hiking this trail with snowshoes (what my friend and I used) or cross country skis. The trail is not groomed, and without them it will be quite a tough experience. Also, plan ahead to get the maximum amount of daylight possible (with winter days up here being as short as they are).
