Trail description:Vista and Roundtop are more options for those who choose to hike past Blacktail Ridge. Both peaks are roughly the same height as Blacktail. The trail itself starts down Blacktail's northern (far) side. From there, it follows a somewhat long, windy ridge, which splits eventually and leads towards either Rountop on the left, or Vista on the right. Several large rock formations, and ancient glacial valleys are visible on the left along the way to Vista. Roundtop is the slightly easier option. The last stretch up the side of Vista's peak is a short but steep climb up scree and larger rocks. Once at the top, even more of the chugach range is visible, including several of the northern chugach peaks described in this site, as well as even mount Marcus Baker (the highest mountain in the chugach range) on particuarly good days, to the northeast. Difficulty:Depends on how much you've hiked already. If doing this in one day, it can be difficult to go all the way from baldy's summit, to blacktail's summit, to Vista or Roundtop; although the ridge in and of itself isn't too hard. Just take a good breather after you've reached Blacktail, and consider how far you want to go beforehand. Directions:Proceed from the top of Blacktail Ridge. Additional Information:Don't bite off more then you can chew. Not a lot of people go beyond blacktail; this is just an extra, somewhat more ambitious hike for those who are in good shape and have the extra time. |
